- Notes on FLUSHOT2:
-
- The original FLU_SHOT merely returned a "fail" condition to the calling
- program when it detected a "harmful" operation on COMMAND.COM. In
- some cases, such as an overt attempt from the command prompt to erase
- COMMAND.COM, the calling program would misinterpret this and would end
- up acting as if a 'DEL *.*' had been entered. This caused people to
- believe that FLU_SHOT itself was a trojan!
-
- Well, it isn't, but since it also must now protect against the, er,
- rather inventive ways which people attempt to destructively test things,
- I've modifed it a bit, and it does some additional protections now,
- including protecting against destructive operations to the two hidden
- system files, attempts by user programs to write directly disk and a few
- other interesting items. The new version is called FLUSHOT2.COM
-
- Additionally, FLUSHOT2 will now force an exit to the program attempting
- the "illegal" write, instead of just a "fail" return. This should protect
- even those strange people who are surprised that COMMAND.COM follows their
- directions when they answer affirmatively to the "Are You Sure?" question!
-
- Finally, since some people are loath to execute a self-de-arc'er, this and
- newer releases of FLU_SHOT will henceforth be distributed in a more "normal"
- form of '.ARC' so you can examine each member of the archive in full
- confidence. Astounding what lengths we must go through because of these
- children, isn't it? When in doubt on the authenticity of a FLU_SHOT release,
- feel free to check it out and or download it on the BBS listed below.
-
- Anyway, I'm still looking for suggestions regarding future enhancements to
- the product, and still seeking copies of the virus itself. I'd like a copy
- of it to hang on my mantlepiece, next to where I intend to hang the trophy
- of the ears and genitalia of the shame-to-all-hackers who created the virus
- itself.
-
- Any questions? Feel free to contact me on my board (RamNet site:ramnet)
- at (212)-889-6438. I can also be reached on BIX as 'greenber'.
-
- Sincerely,
- Ross M. Greenberg
